Carol Service

Our annual Carol Service took place on Tuesday 10th December, and visitors enjoyed an evening of carols, musical performances and readings.

This year, the service offered the chance to reflect on the reality faced by refugees and those seeking asylum throughout the world. We were humbled to have in school a Lampedusa Cross, made from pieces of a boat that was wrecked on 11 October, 2013 off the coast of Lampedusa, Italy. Over 300 Eritrean and Somali refugees were drowned en-route from Libya to Europe, whilst the inhabitants of the island helped to save the lives of 155 others.
Moved by the plight of those involved, the island carpenter, Mr Tuccio, began to craft crosses from the wreckage and gave them to survivors - as a reflection of their salvation from the sea and hope for the future.

Over 250 members of our school community joined together to reflect, pray, listen and enjoy the season of Advent; whilst looking forward to Christmas. Special thanks to our Choir and Band, as well as the Music and Chaplaincy departments and Fr David Yates of English Martyrs, Whalley.

Photographs from the service can be viewed here.

Farewell to our Deputy Headteachers

We say farewell to our two Deputy Headteachers, Mrs Cathy Hughes-Gooding and Mrs Angela Wilkinson and thank them for their many years of service to St Augustine's. Mrs Hughes Gooding has been at the school for 31 years, initially as a Teacher of Science and eventually promoted to the position of Deputy Headteacher (Pastoral). Mrs Wilkinson was employed by the school twice, having also been a former pupil. Her first position was in the Maths department in 1997 and then she returned to St Augustine's as Assistant Headteacher and then Deputy Headteacher (Curriculum) in 2005. Both have been tireless in their efforts to provide an outstanding education in a caring environment for generations of pupils and we wish them a long, happy and healthy retirement.

Nut Free School

Nut-Free School

Our school community has made a commitment to be a nut-free school for the safety and health of our students. Although we recognise that we cannot guarantee an environment that is completely free from any allergen, we believe that a nut free policy minimises the risk for pupils with nut allergies.

Food allergies can be fatal. Reactions can range from an irritating rash to life-threatening anaphylaxis, and it only requires a small amount of the allergen to set off symptoms. Click here for more information about anaphylaxis.

First aid staff in the school are trained to use Epi-pens (an injection of adrenalin) which are required immediately if there is a serious reaction. However, to minimise the risk of an allergic reaction we cannot have nuts in school in any form.

We need every student, teacher and parent to help us make St Augustine’s a safer place for students who have food allergies.

So please do not put any nut products in your child’s lunch box.

nuts

We also cannot allow items such as Celebrations, Quality Street, Roses or Heroes as these include peanuts, hazelnuts and coconut in some of the selections.

There are many other products that can present a risk, so please look at the ingredients list of products closely. We appreciate that this is an additional thing to check but we know that you will recognise the importance of creating a safe environment.

St. Augustine’s school is an inclusive school where each student is valued. We respect the needs of ALL of our students, including those with allergies. Our nut-free policy allows students with food allergies to enjoy classroom and lunch time with their fellow students.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to speak to a member of staff.

Glasses Collection Appeal

COLLECTION CLOSED - Thank you for your kind donations.

St Augustine's, in conjunction with Whalley District Lions' Club, are collecting glasses (old or new) to donate to developing countries. The gift of vision can have a life-changing impact on young and old alike and we are hoping to collect as many pairs of glasses as we can.

Please ask your parents, families and carers to have a look around the house for any unwanted glasses, no matter what condition. We will pass them to the Whalley and District Lions’ Club, who will get them to the people who need them most.

They can be any type or style of child or adult glasses, and it doesn’t matter if they are not in a case.
